Even though most genoas and jibs are smaller than the mainsails they team up with, your headsail should get at least as much careful trimming attention as your main. That's because a jib feels no disturbance from the mast and sails in an eternal lift created by flow around the main. As a result, your headsail provides more than its share of your boat's power.

With a ten o'clock first start, the teams were up early and off the dock by 0830.? The mistral continued all night and perfectly until 1500, when it abruptly shifted 180 degrees and a sea breeze filled in on the bay.?
Fortunately we go our three races in by 1430 and we were headed back to the dock by the time the big shift occurred.

The wind turned 180 degrees today and we had a mistral of up to 30 knots. There was enough carnage after race one that the committee sent us to the shore where we waited a short time until they called it for the day.
Onboard Desafio, we had a decent result finishing 4th, but unfortunately did not leave the race track feeling really good. How is that possible?

I actually came into this in a very unique way; I had never sailed before I was twenty years old! I got a summer job as a sail maker in the North Michigan town where I lived, and the funny thing is that I had never occurred to me that there was actually somebody who made sails! I had never thought “I wonder where sails come from?!”
It was an interesting start- I begged my way into the job and became obsessed!
