It was as wild a day at the Farr 40 East Coast Championship on the Chesapeake Bay, with massive wind shifts and huge changes in pressure. It was tough for competitors to make sense of it all, but the remarkable fact is the top five places remain unchanged from the opening day...

When it comes to competitive sailing this summer, Newport’s dance card is full, leading with the grandfather of all events, the 159th New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta presented by Rolex. Interrupted only by war, the event, scheduled for June 14-16, has continued its historic legacy for well over a century and a half, making it the oldest regatta in the country. Equally impressive is its delivery of hard-core racing and sporting camaraderie at one of sailing’s most renowned playgrounds and one of the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs. ..

There was a sentence from America's Cup Racing Management boss Iain Murray yesterday that will have raised the heart rates of the challengers and maybe particularly that of Emirates Team New Zealand.
Asked what sort of factors the review committee (chaired by Murray) would look at after the Andrew Simpson tragedy, Murray said: "We'll look at when we sail, the times [of the day] we sail and the winds."..

Article courtesy of Ted Keller — May 11-12 saw the inaugural Eagle Lake Open MC Regatta. Eagle Lake Sailing Club is located in the Southwest corner of Michigan, just over the state line from Elkhart, IN. They have an active MC fleet that has been growing and improving together. The next development step to follow is "they gotta regatta."
A fleet of 18 MCs showed up, ready to brave the predicted weather conditions and take on the competition. The forecast was pretty sketchy with cool temperatures, breezy, and rain likely...

The death of an America's Cup sailor in San Francisco last Thursday has wrought days of excruciating sadness and understandable analysis, but for me it loosed also a third thought-stream, one I never could have imagined even 24 months ago. At four Olympics from Barcelona 1992 to Athens 2004, I had witnessed most everything from archery to wrestling to team handball to fencing and even to pelota, but never sailing. Somehow in the delirious, sleepless Olympic muddles I had missed entirely the seas, which in Atlanta's case lay all the way out at Savannah. I had seen no dinghies. I had met no sailors. I had sustained obliviousness...

Oracle are seeking to lengthen the races in the America's Cup in San Francisco - possibly to gain an advantage over challengers like Emirates Team New Zealand.
However, the change, to be discussed at a pivotal May 14 meeting in the US, seems unlikely to occur. Changes of that nature can only be made with the unanimous consent of all three challengers and Team NZ are against it, even before the views of fellow challengers Artemis and Luna Rossa are known...

Spring has sprung for sure and spring brought some big unstable windy conditions this year to Lake Hoover just outside Columbus, Ohio. Thirty-one MC teams made it to this annual fun event on one long, skinny lake. This lake is a couple of miles long running north and south but only a couple of hundred yards wide. Like most spots in the upper Midwest normal winds usually consist of southwest winds or southeast winds in the spring and summer but not for these two days...

The RC44 Trapani Cup really did go down to the wire, the eventual winner not decided until the final metres of the final race of the event.
Team Aqua had laid the gauntlet down to Team CEEREF winning the first two races of the day. Going into the final decider Aqua led by just one-point, CEEREF needed to put a boat between them and Aqua to win the regatta. CEEREF thought they had done enough down the final run with Katusha between the pair, but in the final 100 metres the long term partnership of Chris Bake and Cameron Appleton snatched victory...

There's something about sailing in Charleston that causes Viperers to wax poetic. Enjoy. ..

The long running dispute between the designer of the Laser dinghy Bruce Kirby and one of the Laser builders LaserPerformance, the builder and supplier of Lasers into UK, Europe and North America, because of non-payment of design royalties is now much wider than ever before and now it appears that it’s likely to threaten supplies of Lasers.
