Quantum Collegiate Female Sailor of the Year

QSDG, 4/6/2007 11:12:13 AM
For the past four years Quantum has been proud to recognize collegiate sailing’s top female sailor. It is the counterpart to the Everett B. Morris College Sailor of the Year trophy which is awarded to the top male sailor. “With the growing role of women in our sport, we felt it was only appropriate that the best female sailors should receive the same recognition as the top men’s sailors,” notes Ed Reynolds Quantum’s president. In addition to the award, winners have also received free sails and help with arranging charter boats to enable them to compete in the Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship. Quantum one-design experts have been on hand to help with tuning and training to give them the best chance of being of being competitive in this premier event of women’s sailing. Each of these women has gone on the distinguish themselves.

She has continued to sail in local one-design and PHRF races; she has served as a sailing coach one of the local high school teams and has served as volunteer coach at Old Dominion. Corrie and her 2003 Rolex Women’s Keel Boat Championship Team received the US Sailing Arthur Hanson Rescue medal for their efforts in rescuing a fellow competitor during that event.

Anna Tunnicliffe is the number one ranked Laser Radial sailor in the US. She has twice been named a finalist for the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year. www.annatunnicliffe.com.

Alana O’Reilly is currently the Assistant Sailing Coach at Georgetown University. Since winning the award in 2006, Alana has been busy coaching and has competed in a few Vanguard 15 regattas.

The award is given to the woman sailor who has consistently performed at the highest competitive levels in conference and national championships. The award initially utilizes a low-point ranking system based on finishing positions and relative fleet sizes at women’s regattas of a national scope. The selection is confirmed by the ICSA All-America Selection Committee.

This year’s award is currently up in the air, and will be given to one of a fine crop of extremely competitive current standouts including freshman classmates from College of Charleston Allie Bleecher and Shannon Heusler, senior Emily Hill from Yale, her sister Charlotte Hill, a junior from the Naval Academy, and Evan Brown a junior from Stanford.

The Quantum Female Sailor of the Year award will be announced on May 25th in Norfolk, Virginia, the site of this year’s collegiate women’s national championship.
