The 2010 Melges32 National’s started today in beautiful
harbor Springs, Michigan. Yesterday the fleet was treated to 15-20 knots, 70
degree water, 3 foot waves and warm sunny skies for the practice day. The 15
boats that made the long trip to northern Michigan were all stoked to be here
as this is a great venue to practice for the Worlds this fall in San Fran.
Today the weather was near perfect again with a lighter 8-12 knot breeze. The
race committee started on time today and got in 3 great races for the start of
this year’s National’s. Ryan DeVos and his team on the VOLPE got
off to a great start with a 4,2,2 to take the early lead in this 4 day event.
Ed Baird was masterful in placing us at the boat end and protecting the favored
right side today. Our new Quantum class sails were fast right out of the bag
today as we had great speed both upwind and downwind. Team RED and SAMBA PA TI
are right behind us with 10 points so lots of racing left. The Little Traverse
YC is doing a fantastic job running this event with great racing and shore side
activities, so we are looking for more fun sailing this weekend. Great start
for Quantum boats again this year, as the National’s were won last year
by the red ROUGAROU with all new Quantum sails on San Fran Bay. We will keep
you posted from pleasant Harbor Springs this week.
